Department of BioMedical Engineering

Right from the date of inception of Mahatma Gandhi Mission’s College of Engineering and Technology (MGMCET), Department of Biomedical Engineering started a four years full-time undergraduate degree program (BE) in Biomedical Engineering with an intake of 15 students in the year 1986. Novelty and attractiveness of the program saw the intake gradually growing to 60 by the year 1997. Encouraged by the response, the institution started two years full-time postgraduate degree program (ME) in Biomedical Engineering with intake of 18 students in 2001. It is the only recognized college in the University of Mumbai to impart postgraduate degree program (ME) in Biomedical Engineering. The department is facilitated with in-campus Medical College and Hospital. Our students visit various departments in the hospital like Radiology, Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Pathology, Physiotherapy, Endoscopy and Operation Theatres etc. for better understanding of the use of biomedical and imaging equipment. Our department was awarded accreditation by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2006 for 3 years. In past thirty-five years, more than 1300 students have graduated in Bio-Medical Engineering and have often obtained rank in the University. Through campus interviews, many students have got placement in reputed companies like PHILIPS, IGATE, Tata Elexi, GE-Healthcare, Infosys, and Roche Diagno  with a package ranging from 3.0 to 6.0 Lakhs.

Department of Biomedical Engineering has highly qualified, competent, and dedicated faculties and well-equipped laboratories, namely Biomedical Instrumentation (BMI Lab), Medical Electronics (ME Lab) Laboratory, Computer Application (CA Lab), Biomedical Transducers & Medical Imagining (BTMI Lab), and Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP Lab). Faculties and students of the department contribute significantly to the research through ME dissertation projects, industry sponsorship & collaboration and research projects funded by Government departments. Our research areas include heart rate variability, respiration rate variability, body composition analysis, neuro-muscular investigations, prosthetics, hearing aids, electrical impedance tomography, spirometry, respiratory sound analysis, wavelet transform, electro-cardiography, magnetic stimulation, peripheral pulse analysis,  walking aids, myo-electric arm, anaesthesia depth monitoring,  model CT, patient monitoring and planter pressure measurement goniometer etc. which have led to good number of publications in national and international conferences and journals.

University of Mumbai approved our RESEARCH CENTRE in Bio-Medical Engineering for PhD (Technology) in 2015. This development has given impetus to our department by bringing all the three programs (graduate, postgraduate and doctoral in Bio-Medical Engineering) of Mumbai University under one umbrella. This is the only department in whole of Mumbai University which offers post-graduation and doctorate in Bio-Medical Engineering. Our department has been awarded two research projects as principal investigator and one research project as co-investigator in the area of biomedical engineering amounting to rupees 90 Lakhs, by Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, Government of India. The research centre has already submitted two theses to the Mumbai University for award of PhD degree and admitted 4 candidates in the academic year 2021-22.
